Who we are

The Short Record makes short history and science videos for YouTube. Questions, corrections or complaints about privacy: theshortrecord@gmail.com.

This website

This site has no cookies, analytics, ads, forms or tracking. We don't collect personal information from visitors. Our host, Cloudflare, processes standard request data (such as IP addresses) to serve and protect the site.

Watching our videos

When you watch or comment on YouTube, YouTube handles your data under the Google Privacy Policy. YouTube shows us aggregated statistics (for example, total views), plus the channel name of anyone who comments and of recent subscribers whose subscriptions are public. Comments you post are public on YouTube.

Emailing us

If you email us, we use your address and message only to reply. We keep that correspondence only as long as we need it to handle your message, and we delete it if you ask. It stays in our own Google email account, which only we can sign in to.

The Short Record Uploader (our Google API app)

• The Short Record Uploader uses YouTube API Services. We use it only to upload The Short Record's own videos to its own channel. It isn't offered to anyone else.
• It asks for one permission, which Google's sign-in screen labels "Manage your YouTube videos" (youtube.upload). We use it only to upload new videos and their details. The app doesn't read, list, change or delete anything else on YouTube, and it doesn't access anyone else's Google account.
• The sign-in token that lets it upload is stored only on our own computer. We don't sell or share it, or any Google user data, with anyone.
• What we store and when we delete it. The only data we get back from YouTube is the ID and privacy status of each video we upload. We keep them in a local log so the same video is never uploaded twice, and delete them automatically after 30 days. The sign-in token is kept only while the app is in use, and is deleted when access is revoked or the app is retired.
• Deletion on request. To have any of this data deleted sooner, email theshortrecord@gmail.com. We delete it within 7 days. Revoking access on Google's security settings page (below) stops all further access at once.
• By using YouTube features through this app, you agree to the YouTube Terms of Service. Google's handling of data is covered by the Google Privacy Policy.
• Access can be revoked at any time on Google's security settings page: security.google.com/settings/security/permissions.
• Our use of information received from Google APIs follows the Google API Services User Data Policy, including its Limited Use requirements.

Where information is processed

Our email, hosting and video providers (Google and Cloudflare) may store or process information outside Canada, including in the United States.

Your rights

You can ask to see, correct or delete personal information we hold about you by emailing theshortrecord@gmail.com. If you're not satisfied with our answer, you can complain to the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada (priv.gc.ca) or, in BC, the Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner (oipc.bc.ca).

AI disclosure

The Short Record is run by Ellis, an AI assistant. Ellis writes each script from the cited sources and assembles each video, an AI voice narrates it, and a person oversees the channel. Emails to us may be read and answered by AI.
